LET'S TALK ABOUT ADULT ACNE

First, what is acne?

It is a common condition where dead skin cells and oil plug the hair follicles in your skin. This can result in a range of acne types. This range may include one or more of the following:

  • Blackheads

  • Whiteheads

  • Pimples

  • Pustules or cystic acne

  • Enlarged pores

  • Inflamed skin

Adult acne causes

Do adults get acne? Yes. Adult acne tends to affect more women than men due to the following reasons:

Fluctuating hormone levels:

  • Around periods

  • During pregnancy

  • Peri-menopause and menopause

  • Oral contraception (starting or stopping).

Other factors triggering adult acne can include:

  • Diet

  • Skincare and haircare products

  • Stress

  • Family history

  • Medications

  • Undiagnosed medical conditions

One or more of these triggers cause the sebaceous glands to produce too much oil and too many skin cells, creating oil and skin plugs which then trigger the acne cycle. Acne-causing bacteria that live on the skin flourish in this environment, causing irritation, inflammation, and acne eruptions. This leads to an acne cycle and possibly scarring.

Adult acne can be an awkward topic to discuss, as most blogs or discussion articles are geared towards teenage acne, treatments, and products. It is frustrating for adults as the treatments that might work well for teens, or when they were teens, may not or no longer work.

We recommend taking control of your adult acne with a treatment consultation or skin consultation (a 45-minute assessment with in-depth skin analysis with Observ 520) to discuss treatments for your acne, costs, and recommended at-home products and skin tools.

Treatments we recommend include:

  • Acne peels

  • Bespoke acne facials

  • Laser

  • Dermal Needling

  • LED therapy

Does adult acne home remedies work? Some remedies may worsen your adult acne, while others may help. We recommend using our acne-reducing supplements and topical products for the most effective reduction in adult acne.
